About
Welcome to The Malt House, a hidden gem nestled on E Washington Ave in Madison, WI. This cozy bar has carved out a niche for itself among craft beer aficionados and whiskey lovers alike, earning a reputation as a top choice for those seeking quality libations in a warm and inviting atmosphere.
At The Malt House, the expansive selection of craft beers is nothing short of impressive. From local favorites like Summit Cranky Woodsman Nut Brown Ale to international sensations such as Krombacher Pils and Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, there’s something to please every palate. The bar also boasts an exciting range of Belgian drafts, including the beloved Chimay Grande Reserve and the rich St Bernardus Abt 12. Whether you're indulging in a crisp Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale or savoring a Duchesse De Bourgogne, each pour is served with care and in proper glassware, enhancing the overall experience.
The atmosphere is laid back yet vibrant, inviting patrons to engage in conversation rather than be glued to their screens. As Jeff Frye aptly describes, it's a “super cozy bar” with friendly bartenders who enhance the overall experience, making you feel right at home. The outdoor seating is a delightful option during warmer months, complete with foam seat cushions that provide comfort even on cooler days. This thoughtful detail echoes the bar's focus on creating a welcoming environment.
One of the noteworthy characteristics of The Malt House is its emphasis on community engagement. The owners encourage local musicians to perform, fostering a sense of camaraderie among patrons. The intimate setting also promotes interaction, making it easy to bond over a shared love for exceptional whiskey and unique beers, as highlighted by David Real’s experience.
Though The Malt House doesn't serve food on-site, patrons are welcome to have food delivered, making it a perfect spot to unwind after a long day with friends or a good book. As Tom C noted, the available craft beer selection is complemented by some of the best whiskeys in town, making it a premier destination for enthusiasts.
In summary, The Malt House is more than just a bar; it’s a community hub for people who appreciate quality drinks and a relaxed environment. Its blend of local charm and international flavor, paired with a friendly community atmosphere, makes every visit a memorable one. Whether you’re a Madison local or just passing through, make sure The Malt House is on your list of places to experience. Cheers!
“ Super cozy bar, always a great beer selection and bartenders are super nice. Nice outdoor seating in the summer, and even in the chillier days of autumn/spring since they have nice foam seat cushions you can take outside! Highly recommend. Parking lot is only accessible heading towards East Washington on Milwaukee. ”
“ This is my favorite place to grab a drink. My friend got a small pour of good Gin & I went with a cider & it was 15! I asked if he charged for both drinks cause I thought it would be more. The patio was packed so we sat inside, where the music was so low, it was barely audible. My friend & I had a conversation without having to yell, which was really nice. It's got a really great feel to it. If you want fancy cocktails, this isn't the place for you. But if you want a good draft, they've got plenty to choose. No food menu, but you can get food delivered. Parking is limited in their lot, but Milwaukee st & Winnebago have street parking nearby. ”
“ Great local neighborhood bar. Best whiskey bar in Madison. Also a very good craft beer selection and great beers on tap. With October almost here I had to stop by Bill's bar to try his Oktoberfest beer on tap and wasn't disappointed. It was great and a good size mug (see pic attached). You can find some of the most unique beer and premium whiskey selections in Madison. Great to support locally owned Madison establishments like the Malt House. There is no food kitchen, but you can get food delivered. Check out the Malt House Facebook page to see what nights local bands are playing here. ”
“ Outstanding selection of craft beer, whiskeys and Bourbons. The atmosphere encourages you to talk to your neighbor, not stare at your phone. ”
“ This European style tavern is a classic throw back. The bar itself has some of the best local, national and international beers served in town. And served in proper glassware. The back bar is stocked with a wide and varied selection of high quality whiskies and spirits. There is something here for everyone. Whether you’re looking to meet up with folks or are seeking a drink while reading your current book, this place is for you. Kudos to the team for bringing this to Madison and keeping it alive! ”
“ What can I say about the Malt House? I literally moved into the neighborhood 7 years ago in large part because of this bar. It is without a doubt the best craft beer bar in Madison, and it has some really stiff competition. Key things to know: - This bar has no television. This is a good thing. - The outdoor seating is fantastic when it's decent enough to be outside. - Parking is limited, but there's plenty of walkable street parking. - The live music they have fits the vibe of the place perfectly. This is a bar primarily for enjoying great beverages and having conversations. When there's live music it fits that vibe. - There's no food although sometimes a food cart during summer, but you can order or bring outside food in. ”
“ Great atmosphere, tap selection, and local music. The big patio is a huge plus during the pandemic ”
“ Good prices on great beer. There is a budget craft draft. Service from Randy St Bernardus is great, and folks are friendly. Lots of cool breweriana and a small selection of bottles and cans that rotates. Nice selection without being overwhelming. Accessible by bike and transit. Shady patio ”
